Practical wisdom for the age of AI.

Human development for acting in favor of the common good.

Intelligence and knowledge are not enough. The question is not only what machines can do, but what humans need to develop.

The idea

From intelligence to practical wisdom

Intelligence helps us solve problems.
Knowledge gives us information.
But neither guarantees good judgment or responsible action.

Knowing what is right is not always enough to act accordingly. Practical wisdom must be cultivated through experience, reflection and practice.

What we develop

The capacities behind practical wisdom

Perception

Seeing clearly before reacting.

Judgment

Understanding context, trade-offs and what matters.

Character

The habits and dispositions that let us act well, and consistently, not only know what we should do.

Responsibility

Recognizing the effects of our choices on others and the world around us.

And together

Practical wisdom

Practical wisdom brings perception, judgment, character and responsibility together with experience, intelligence and knowledge, helping us act well in context.

How we work

Ideas that become practice

Research

We study human development across philosophy, neuroscience, behavioral science and AI.

Frameworks

We translate ideas into practical models for real decisions and situations.

Learning experiences

Understanding is not enough. We create opportunities to practice, reflect and learn from experience, helping turn insight into judgment, habits and responsible action.

Enabling action

We connect people, organizations, knowledge and resources when we can help worthwhile initiatives for the common good move forward.

Our framework

3P-I — Perceive. Ponder. Practice.

A simple framework for perceiving more clearly, exercising judgment, putting it into practice and learning from what happens.

Read the framework

It draws on Ethism, our practical philosophy for cultivating the qualities that make practical wisdom possible.

The common good

A shared horizon

How we live, work and act affects other people and the world we share.

Each of us, within our circumstances and possibilities, can take responsibility for our choices and their consequences.

The common good is not only a horizon for our decisions. It is something we can help build, care for and protect through everyday action.

How do my choices affect others and the world we share? What could I do differently?

About

Habitum Vitae is a non-profit association and think tank for human development. We research and develop ways to strengthen practical wisdom, turn it into responsible action and help enable initiatives that contribute to the common good.

We also work with people and organizations who want to collaborate on projects or move initiatives for the common good forward.

We work selectively: we research, publish and collaborate when we believe we can contribute something useful.
